Over the last few days, a viral video trend dubbed the "carrot tissue cat" challenge has swept Chinese social media, sparking nationwide memes, mass participation and even a jokingly named "national exam" for pets.

The trend began when a pet blogger tried to train her cat to identify a carrot and a tissue using a dog-style reward system. Instead of smooth progress, the cat hovered constantly between almost there and utter confusion, repeatedly resetting just before success.
The cat pauses, tests boundaries, and looks bewildered; the owner swings between frustration and unwavering praise.
Along the way, unexpected realizations emerged. Many pet owners became aware of the fact that their pets were far better at reading emotions than they had imagined — watching expressions, testing limits, silently negotiating.

Soon, pet bloggers across the country joined in, enrolling cats, dogs, rabbits, parrots and even turtles. Most attempts ended with a resigned "Forget it — good job!" Yet the pets hardly lost out: they enjoyed more interaction, more attention and plenty of treats.
There is a concept in psychology called "unconditional positive regard" — acceptance that is not tied to achievement, but to one's very existence.
In the "carrot tissue cat" videos, many people found a rare sense of warmth: even when things go wrong, reassurance remains — there's still someone saying, "Good job!"
