Die toten Freunde)。

In preparing this international literature project, we never anticipated that, following the pandemic, the project would also be affected by war.
The 42th issue of One-way Street Journal,
Contemporary Plays II–The World Has Gone Mad, has now been published, featuring two plays by Swiss playwrights: Dominik Busch's
Der Chor
The Choir) and Ariane Koch's
Die toten Freunde
The Dead Friends
We had invited them to China last year, hoping they could engage in face-to-face conversations with theatre enthusiasts in Beijing, Shanghai, and Nanjing this spring. Yet the upheaval in Iran and the subsequent spread of conflict across the Middle East—where their flights were originally scheduled to layover—has left us uncertain how to proceed.
The international news, once seemingly distant, now tangibly impacts our work and daily lives. We can only hope for a swift end to hostilities, allowing residents to live in peace, and ensuring the Swiss playwrights' journey to China proceeds safely.
Nevertheless, precisely this situation intensifies our longing for the envisioned international exchange. People of different races, nations, languages, and cultural backgrounds can still understand one another through translation and dialogue, discovering shared interests: the meaning of life, the well-being of hearts, and concerns about humanity's collective destiny.
Thus, this time, once more, we place our faith in theatre. We believe in theatre that dares to reveal hidden reality, theatre that continues to probe eternal questions, theatre that gathers hearts together...We believe theatre's monologues and dialogues are crafted for our generation.
If all goes well—and we hope it does—we shall meet Dominik Busch and Ariane Koch in a physical space. Beginning with theatre, we shall converse on myriad matters, exploring where love and hope might be found today.
The project is supported by Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia Shanghai, Goethe-Institut Beijing (China), Shanghai Literature and Art Publishing House, the Department of Culture and Education of the Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Shanghai, Theatre YOUNG, Nanjing University's Drama, Film & Television Studies, and OWSPACE.
