在周圍人眼里,尹卓無疑就是那個“登頂的人”。他所收到的錄取通知書里包括牛津大學計算理論化學理學碩士、劍橋大學科學計算哲學碩士、帝國理工學院軟電子材料研究型碩士,無論是主攻的專業、還是就讀的學校,都令人艷羨。
但在他看來,名校的offer只是對自己一個階段成績的認可與表彰,更重要的,是自己為之付出的努力,以及在努力過程中真真切切掌握的學習能力、工作能力。“那才是屬于我的,讓我終身受益的寶藏。”
時光回溯,就讓我們從尹卓本科就讀的寧波諾丁漢大學校園里,尋找他奮斗與成長的點點滴滴。
01
從“應對考試”到“研究科學”

高中時期,“化學”之于尹卓,就是一門普普通通的學科。“記牢公式和解題思路,爭取考個高分”,是他唯一的學習目標。
而在走進寧波諾丁漢大學之后,一幅科學研究的瑰麗長卷在尹卓面前逐漸展開,里面凝結著一位位科學家先輩的智慧結晶,記錄了他們奮不顧身追求真理的動人故事。尹卓的心中,就此埋下了一顆種子。
寧諾的優質教學資源、良好學術氛圍,是最豐厚的土壤、最甘甜的雨露。
早在2015年的英國大學生普查中,諾丁漢大學化學系就被選為羅素大學集團三個最佳化學系之一。2020年的QS世界大學學科排名中,諾丁漢大學化學系位列全英第七。
這些優良傳統和優質資源,同樣呈現在了寧波諾丁漢大學的課堂上——尹卓經常能看到來自英國的化學系“明星教授”前來教授課程、分享交流前沿學術成果,可以和化學系畢業的優秀學長學姐面對面交流,還能得到機會參加在倫敦大學學院舉行的計算化學培訓討論會。
“這愈發讓我覺得,選擇寧諾、選擇化學專業,是一條正確的、應當繼續堅持的道路。”
寧諾給予尹卓研究科學的支持,決不只限于校園內。
“大三暑期,我跟隨劍橋大學博士后Kristaps老師,在英國諾丁漢大學參加了科研實習,這是一段非常寶貴的實踐經歷。”尹卓深刻地記得,他跟隨老師研究有機化學反應過渡態和機理,不僅獲取了許多有機化學相關知識,還學到了編程方面的實用技巧,“不僅加深了對學科的理解,還培養了創新思維和解決問題的能力。”
也正是通過這樣的科研實習,讓尹卓在名校的面試官前更加自信從容。“劍橋的面試內容傾向于專業技能和科研經歷,牛津的面試內容傾向于物理化學基礎知識。無論哪一方面,我都做了充分的準備,向面試官展現了扎實的學術基礎和對所申請專業的深入理解。”
過去數年的積累與實踐,也讓尹卓真正愛上了科研。“我對計算化學有著濃厚的興趣,打算在英國繼續深造、攻讀博士,將來在大學任教,努力成為一名優秀的研究學者。”談及學術理想與職業規劃,他分外堅定。

從“認識世界”到“擁抱世界”

在本科四年的時光,寧諾不僅為尹卓搭建了掌握知識、提升能力的平臺,還讓他真正感受到了國際化高校“包容開放”的魅力。
寧諾的“包容開放”,是營造全英文的教學環境,是提供大量海外交流、實習的機會。長時間與外籍教師面對面交流,以純英文思維表達、寫作、思考,尹卓很快擁有了扎實的語言功底。同時,他通過在英國參加的學術交流和科研實習,深入了解到國際前沿的學術成果和科研理念,素質更全面、視野更開闊。“申請海外研究生時,這兩項優勢讓我受益匪淺。”
寧諾的“包容開放”,是不斷為學習做“加法”,讓學生以積極主動的姿態投入進去,真正理解專業知識的內在原理。尹卓記得,寧諾的老師會提供很多課本之外的閱讀材料,幫助學生跳出知識點“死記硬背”的舊邏輯,“刷新了我對學習的認知,充滿新鮮感和趣味性。”
寧諾的“包容開放”,是突破傳統應試教育的藩籬,更加注重提升學生的綜合素質。除了深耕學術研究,尹卓也積極地參與到社團活動、學生組織、社會實踐項目之中,磨煉自己的語言表達能力、團隊合作能力、組織領導能力和跨學科思維。“研究學者不能是孤僻的、封閉的,也需要‘接地氣’,讓自己成為三觀更完善、性格更完整的人。”
越過重重山丘,才知風景如此雋秀。在如此環境的熏陶下,那個“一門心思做題考試”的高中生尹卓,一點一點“認識世界”,一步一步“走向世界”,直至敞開懷抱“擁抱世界”。如今,他正站在全球頂尖學府的新起點上,向更加險峻的山巔攀登,向更加美好的未來招手。
UNNC student admitted by Oxbridge for outstanding research capabilities
Zhuo Yin, a graduate of Chemistry at the University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC), has received admission offers from top universities including the University of Oxford, the University of Cambridge, and Imperial College London. He believes that the offers are merely recognition and commendation of his achievements at this certain stage. What’s more important is the effort he has put in, as well as the learning and working abilities he has gained during the process.
As early as 2015, the School of Chemistry at the University of Nottingham was selected as one of the top three Schools of Chemistry within the Russell Group in the UK’s National Student Survey. In the 2020 QS World University Rankings by Subject, it ranked seventh in the UK.
These fine traditions and high-quality resources are also present in the classrooms at the UNNC. Zhuo would often meet with visiting “star” professors of chemistry hailing from the UK to give lectures and share cutting-edge academic achievements. He had face-to-face exchanges with outstanding graduates, and also had the opportunity to participate in a computational chemistry training seminar held at University College London.
"This makes me more convinced that choosing UNNC and chemistry is the right path that I should continue persisting on."
UNNC's support for Zhuo's research is not limited to campus activities. "In the summer of my third year, I participated in a research internship at the University of Nottingham under the mentorship of Dr Kristaps Ermanis, a Postdoctoral Research Associate at Cambridge University. It was a very valuable practical experience." Zhuo remembers working with the teacher on research related to transition states and mechanisms of organic chemical reactions, where he gained much knowledge in organic chemistry and learned practical programming skills. "Not only did it deepen my understanding of the subject, but it also cultivated my innovative thinking and problem-solving skills."
During four years of undergraduate study, UNNC provided Zhuo with a platform to acquire knowledge and enhance his abilities, and allowed him to truly experience the charm of an international university with an inclusive and open atmosphere.
UNNC has created an all-English teaching environment and provides ample opportunities for overseas exchanges and internships for students. Through frequent face-to-face communication with foreign staff and expressing, writing, and thinking completely in English, Zhuo quickly developed solid language skills. At the same time, through participating in academic exchanges and research internships in the UK, he was able to gain a deep understanding of cutting-edge international academic achievements and scientific research concepts, making him more well-rounded and visionary."These two advantages benefitted me greatly when applying for overseas postgraduate studies."
Zhuo recalled that at UNNC there were usually a lot of reading materials beyond textbooks, helping students break away from the old logic of rote memorisation of knowledge points and refreshing their understanding of learning with fun. In addition to academic research, Zhuo actively participated in extracurricular activities, student organisations and social practice projects, improved his language skills, teamwork and leadership abilities and interdisciplinary thinking, making him "a person with a more complete perspective and character".
