NEWS FROM THE MOVEMENT

Chattahoochee Riverkeeper (Georgia, U.S.) was recently quoted in a New York Times article titled, “As Meta Built, Neighbors Saw Faucets Dry Up.” The story examines how Meta’s $750 million data center in Newton County, Georgia, is contributing to local water shortages. The facility uses about 500,000 gallons of water per day for cooling, and nearby residents, some living just 1,000 feet away, have reported that their wells are drying up. Newton County could face a water deficit by 2030 without major infrastructure upgrades. Data centers often do not disclose water usage, which limits regulatory oversight, and the local water authority is proposing improvements to its recycling facilities to meet the growing demand. In a recent study, one company requested permission to use nine million gallons per day. While Meta has offered to conduct a well study, it has not accepted responsibility for the water issues affecting the community.

Inland Empire Waterkeeper (California, U.S.) has launched a new extreme heat program to map natural cooling zones. This program, called Building Resilient and Empowering Zones for Everyone (BREZE), aims to identify and map existing and potential green spaces throughout the region that provide natural cooling. Currently in its planning phase, BREZE is funded through the Extreme Heat and Community Resilience Program in partnership with the Center for Community Action and Environmental Justice. According to the Governor’s Office, climate change is leading to more frequent and severe unusually hot days, impacting communities across California. Inland Empire Waterkeeper has spent the past two years raising awareness about extreme heat in the Inland Empire, which laid the foundation for the BREZE initiative.

Patuxent Riverkeeper, (Maryland, U.S.) Fred Tutman was featured on PBS News Student Reporting Labs, where he discussed his efforts not only to safeguard the river through lawsuits and lobbying for change but also to preserve the tradition of community activism. After a successful career in television and radio, Tutman felt a strong connection to the water, having grown up near it, playing and fishing in the river. Patuxent Riverkeeper has launched a passion project aimed at mentoring the new generation. This project integrates movements that allow individuals to experience the environment through their unique perspectives. Tutman hopes that by building this community, a new generation of river keepers will emerge.

Waterkeepers Bangladesh (Bangladesh) recently launched a month-long tree planting campaign in Pekua. Special guests, including the founding president of the Pekua Press Club and the Convener of the Salt, Fisheries, and Agriculture Welfare Association, attended the event. Following their speeches, the guests planted trees to officially inaugurate the campaign and distributed fruit and timber saplings to students. Delwar Hossain, the Pekua Upazila Coordinator for Waterkeepers Bangladesh, announced that as part of this initiative, saplings of fruit and forest trees would be planted and distributed across educational institutions throughout Pekua.

West Virginia Rivers Coalition, the parent organization for West Virginia Headwaters Waterkeeper (West Virginia, U.S.), recently filed a response to post-hearing briefs in its case against The Chemours Company FC, LLC for violating the Clean Water Act. Since 2024, Chemours’ Washington Works facility has exceeded permitted discharge limits for HFPO-DA, or "GenX chemicals," releasing toxic "forever chemicals" into the Ohio River, a drinking water source for 5 million people.

The organization is petitioning the court to require Chemours to follow the law, especially as increased production has led to more pollution, while the company argues that compliance could lead to job losses. A ruling on the preliminary injunction is expected before the trial begins in mid-September.

CAMPAIGN UPDATES

Today: PFAS Virtual Public Meeting

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is holding a virtual public meeting TODAY from 1:00 to 4:30 p.m. ET to receive comments on the national drinking water standard for PFAS. Despite overwhelming scientific evidence and public concern, the agency announced plans earlier this year to delay and weaken these critical protections. If you are unable to join the listening session, you can still submit written statements to Tracey Ward by COB, today. Please fill out this form to help us track participation and to receive easy-to-use talking points developed to support individuals and Waterkeeper groups who wish to comment.

Global Plastics Treaty Negotiations Resume Next Week

Negotiations to finalize a global plastics treaty resume next week at INC-5.2. From August 4–15, world leaders will gather in Geneva for the final scheduled round of talks aimed at tackling the plastic pollution crisis. After last year’s failure to reach an agreement, the pressure is on to deliver a strong, binding treaty that protects people and the planet. This is a critical opportunity to make our voices heard. In addition to this communications toolkit (English | Fran?ais | Espa?ol | 簡體中文 | ?????), we have also released a Dive Into Democracy urging U.S. leaders to advocate for the strongest possible treaty. Waterkeeper Alliance, the Break Free From Plastics coalition, and other organizations will also present a united front in Geneva to support advocacy efforts and elevate community voices.

Draft Sludge Risk Assessment Comment

The U.S. EPA has extended the deadline for the Draft Sludge Risk Assessment until August 14. We invite U.S. Waterkeeper groups to join this comment addressing the risk PFOA and PFOS pose when they are spread through the land application. If interested, please fill out this form by our internal deadline of COB, July 31.

Submit Your PHMSA Comment Today!

The U.S. Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) is accepting public comments on a new rulemaking through August 4. This action is in response to a federal mandate to “Unleash American Energy and Improve Government Efficiency” and may seek to “eliminate undue burdens on the identification, development, and use of domestic energy resources.” We are deeply concerned that this could lead to weakened pipeline safety regulations—putting public and environmental health at risk. Waterkeeper Alliance will be submitting a comment, and we strongly encourage U.S.-based Waterkeeper groups to do the same as water defenders in support of strong pipeline safety protections. Save the Dates: Biogas and Slaughterhouse Webinars

Waterkeeper Alliance will host an interactive webinar to discuss U.S. state policy issues surrounding factory farm biogas on Wednesday, August 20, at 12:00 pm CT/1:00 pm ET. Waterkeeper groups globally are encouraged to attend or reach out to Campaign Manager Patience Burke if they would like to learn more about factory farm biogas.

Waterkeeper Alliance will host a webinar on Wednesday, September 24, at 12:00 pm CT/1:00 pm ET to discuss next steps following the U.S. EPA’s final action on the slaughterhouse rule. Waterkeeper Alliance, Black Warrior Riverkeeper, Cape Fear Riverkeeper, and Waterkeepers Chesapeake have been engaged in a six-year effort to secure the strongest possible federal water quality standards for slaughterhouses and rendering facilities. The U.S. EPA is required by consent decree to take final action by August. We will use this webinar as an opportunity to discuss details of the final rule and subsequent related advocacy.
