NEWS FROM THE MOVEMENT
Anacostia Riverkeeper (District of Columbia, U.S.) is partnering with the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments, with funding from the NOAA Marine Debris Program, to address abandoned and derelict vessels in the Anacostia River. Over four years, the project aims to remove 28 vessels, and it has already removed 13 in its first six months. Abandoned boats can block navigational channels and damage ecosystems that support wildlife and recreation. Some vessels may also contain hazardous materials that can leak into the water. This project will remove contamination sources, restore habitats for fish and mussels, clear debris from the river, and enhance its recreational value for boaters and paddlers. In addition to collaborating with boathouse users for removal efforts, Anacostia Riverkeeper and partners are also organizing community engagement sessions to prevent future problems with abandoned and derelict boats in the marinas.
Mobile Baykeeper (Alabama, U.S.) has filed a notice of intent to sue the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers under the U.S. Endangered Species Act. The Corps allowed dredged material to be dumped as part of a project to deepen and widen the Port of Mobile and its ongoing maintenance, claiming it benefits the ecosystem by helping to renourish the area with sediment. Bayou La Batre Mayor Henry Barnes calls the practice “ridiculous,” while State Senator Chris Elliott says the legislature may step in to protect state waters. Elliott is reviewing a Maryland law that prohibits this type of dredge disposal in the Chesapeake Bay.
Suncoast Waterkeeper (Florida, U.S.) recently released a report featured in the Bradenton Herald, highlighting the effects of hurricanes on mangrove ecosystems. Mapped data from their Mangrove Ranger Program, revealed that some mangrove areas suffered devastating impacts from the 2024 hurricane season. Although vital to the region’s recreation and economy, mangroves are monitored less frequently than other ecosystems. Highly vulnerable to extreme weather and human activities like trimming, Suncoast Waterkeeper plans to expand the survey program to enhance support for mangrove conservation.
Upper Missouri Waterkeeper (Montana, U.S.) has filed a 60-day Notice of Intent to Sue against the U.S. EPA for its failure to approve or disapprove Montana’s revised water quality standards, as required under the Clean Water Act. The lawsuit seeks a court declaration that Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks (FWP) is negligent in its constitutional duty to maintain and improve a clean and healthy environment. Additionally, it requests that the court find FWP’s new protocol for stream flows to be unscientific and unlawfully implemented. Currently, Montana is experiencing its most severe drought on record, and FWP is reportedly refusing to take action when the rivers and streams need water the most.
