Chattahoochee Riverkeeper (Georgia, U.S.) has requested that LaGrange Mayor Arrington and the city council enact a 90-day moratorium on data center development. This pause would allow the city to create an ordinance that will guide future data center developments. CRK signed a letter stating that this request is a reasonable and cautious step that elected officials can take to engage with an active and motivated community. Data centers require more than just typical economic development projects. The Georgia Department of Community Affairs is currently revising the rules governing the Developments of Regional Impact application and review process to address data centers as a distinct type of development.

Anacostia Riverkeeper (Washington D.C., U.S.) is celebrating a significant victory for the river. Attorney General Schwalb has announced that Washington Gas has agreed to actively contain hazardous pollution that has been seeping into the Anacostia River. The company will now be responsible for installing a new floating boom and filtration system to capture and prevent pollution in the water. Also, they will construct a new barrier in the soil along the shoreline, comply with ongoing monitoring by the district, and pay penalties for any noncompliance.

Delaware Riverkeeper (Delaware, U.S.) announced that the U.S. EPA has finalized new water quality standards for a 38-mile section of the Delaware River between Philadelphia and Wilmington. The organizations are also raising concerns about how rushed recovery efforts have damaged sensitive aquatic habitats and endangered species, and are pushing for more ecologically informed disaster planning going forward.

Neuse Riverkeeper and Director of Advocacy at Sound Rivers (North Carolina, U.S.), Samantha Krop, was recognized by the Southern Environmental Law Center for two major victories for the Lick Creek watershed. For years, sediment from the Sweetbrier residential development has eroded the Lick Creek watershed, degrading water quality and making it difficult for fish and other aquatic wildlife to survive. Sound Rivers has monitored water quality downstream of Sweetbrier and documented severe and pervasive violations for over two years, including more than 300 instances of permit violations. After years of advocacy and litigation, the developer of Sweetbrier has agreed to take action to prevent sediment pollution in Martin Branch and Hurricane Creek.

Waterkeepers Bangladesh (Bangladesh) and allies staged a symbolic protest in Dhaka to protect the Sundarbans, Hilsha, and salt from coal pollution earlier this month. Speakers, including Sharif Jamil, Buriganga Waterkeeper and executive director of Waterkeepers Bangladesh, warned that the Rampal, Payra, and Matarbari power plants devastate ecosystems, block the migration of Hilsha, and threaten salt production, creating food insecurity. As part of a global action by the Asian Energy Network and Asian Peoples Movement on Date and Development, the event demanded the cancellation of coal projects and an urgent shift to renewable energy.
