NEWS FROM THE MOVEMENT
Atchafalaya Basinkeeper (Louisiana, U.S.) and the Louisiana Crawfish Producers Association-West have filed a lawsuit against the Atchafalaya Basin Program. They allege that the Program has engaged in years of willful mismanagement of the Basin's flood capacity and has failed to protect the state's natural resources, which are essential to the health and welfare of the people, as required by Louisiana's Constitution. The lawsuit seeks to prevent the East Grand Lake project from moving forward. For the past decade, the Atchafalaya Basin Program has launched several disastrous projects, despite knowing they would result in the loss of wetlands and flood capacity. The lawsuit also challenges the legality of closed-door meetings that impact the Atchafalaya Master Plan and raises concerns about the administration of the Atchafalaya Basin Program.
Hudson Riverkeeper (New York, U.S) has received a $4 million grant to deconstruct the Holden Dam on Quassaick Creek in Orange County next fall. Currently, the dam prevents American eels from traveling upstream, resulting in historically low populations. Hudson Riverkeeper, in partnership with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, is working to identify other dams on tributaries of the Hudson River for removal. This project aims to create healthy, free-flowing streams that allow various species to migrate as part of their lifecycles. Matthew Best, Hudson Riverkeeper’s habitat restoration manager, stated that the process of deconstructing a dam is complex, as it involves both the removal of the structure and the stabilization of the stream banks. Many dams, like the Holden Dam, were built around 80 years ago for milling purposes but are no longer in use today.
Potomac Riverkeeper Network (Maryland, U.S.) was recently featured in the New York Times for its leadership in the fight against PFAS, specifically regarding the use of Maryland biosolids on farmland in Virginia. Dean Naujoks, Potomac Riverkeeper, stated that “[biosolids] aren’t safe enough for farms in Maryland, so they’re coming to Virginia,” a state where PFAS legislation is lacking. Maryland exports sewage sludge as an inexpensive fertilizer without properly disclosing its associated hazards. When these biosolids are applied to farmland, the PFAS they contain can leach into the soil and groundwater, and ultimately into rivers.
Save the Sound (New York, U.S.) is disappointed by the decision to approve a casino license on public parkland in the Bronx. The New York State Gaming Facility Location Board approved Bally's application to develop a casino and hotel complex without adequately addressing its environmental impact. Save the Sound argues that Bally's Environmental Impact Statement does not adequately address the company's plans for managing the increased volumes of stormwater and wastewater the project will generate, nor does it consider the additional burden on the aging infrastructure. David Ansel, vice president of the Center for Water Protection at Save the Sound, stated, "Without a comprehensive plan for managing stormwater that maximizes green infrastructure benefits, the increased runoff will make it even more difficult to reduce pollution in New York City waters."
Waterkeepers Bangladesh (Bangladesh) and Dhoritri Rokhhay Amra (DHORA) organized flotillas on nine rivers in Bangladesh to mark the Global Day of Action Against Gas Expansion. The rivers are Buriganga, Pashur, Burishwar, Payra, Bishkhali, Andharmanik, Khowai, Kutubdia Sea Channel, and Magnama-Kutubdia Channel. In support of renewable energy, the boat carries banners and slogans demanding climate justice and rejecting fossil fuel dependence. These actions intensify pressure on the government to halt gas expansion and commit to a swift, just energy transition.
