A paid mobile application called "Dead or Not" has sparked heated discussion on social media after rising to the top of Apple's paid app rankings.

The app, priced at 8 yuan, is currently ranked first among paid applications on Apple's App Store in China.
Designed for people living alone, the app requires users to check in regularly. If no check-in is recorded for several days, the system automatically notifies a designated emergency contact by email.
The developer said the idea was inspired by online discussions about essential apps for daily life and aimed to address safety concerns among solo residents.

The app has drawn mixed reactions from users. Some praised it as a practical tool, especially for elderly people living alone or young urban residents.

Others criticized the app for its complicated check-in process, relatively high price, and potential risks related to data privacy.

Many users also offered suggestions for improvement, including switching notifications from email to text messages and simplifying the check-in process.
The app's name became a particular point of controversy, with numerous users saying it sounded unsettling and proposing alternatives such as "Alive or Not."
