Zhang, a gold medalist at the Tokyo Olympics, announced her retirement from competitive diving on Nov 22, 2025. Her debut in live-streaming commerce followed just eight days later on Nov 30, a swift transition that sparked online debate.
According to a Sports Weekly report, her initial foray was rocky. Appearing visibly tense, she read from a skincare product script at a rapid pace, often avoiding direct eye contact with the camera. Viewer numbers, which peaked at just over 2,000, quickly dwindled to a few hundred.
