Nestled along the road deep into the majestic Bohemian Forest, the late 19th-century Borová Lada Cottage stands as a witness to time. Studio Ply? approaches the renovation with profound respect for the building's historical layers and material essence, refusing to erase the traces of time but turning past flawed modifications into unique design highlights. The once-damaged structure is reborn as the core living area, seamlessly connecting the garden and the preserved kitchen, while the vertically extended barn becomes a versatile space balancing indoor and outdoor, warmth and coolness. Every modification is a dialogue with history, making the old cottage gain new vitality without losing its original charm.

The silhouette of the cottage remains intact, maintaining its original harmony with the Bohemian Forest landscape. Large-format glazing is thoughtfully installed to flood the interior with natural light and frame the surrounding forest views, while large shutters offer protection against harsh weather and ensure privacy when needed. Exposed concrete and visible shutter rails do not hide the new renovation layer but integrate it with the historical texture. Three massive reinforced concrete columns support the roof, cast together with the barn's new foundations, replacing the unsuitable old ones from the 80s and 90s, achieving a perfect blend of structural stability and aesthetic continuity.

The inserted contemporary timber structure in the attic and former stalls area becomes a clever highlight of the renovation. Clad in fibre-cement boards made from natural and recycled materials and plywood, this volume is literally "screwed into" the original building. It houses all sanitary facilities and is separated and insulated from the original structure to prevent moisture penetration, while preserving the historic envelope's vapour-open nature. The original wooden flooring on the ground floor and the tiled stove are retained, linking the past and present of the cottage and evoking a sense of nostalgia and familiarity for those who live here.

The house achieves a perfect balance between modern comfort and historical charm in terms of functionality and daily living. An air-to-water heat pump provides daily heating, managed by a smart home system that also controls the entire electrical installation and motorized exterior shutters. The custom-made "Bed?ich" furniture set, named after the carpenter’s dachshund, adds a warm human touch. The solid oak folding dining table, bed, and bench, with meticulously crafted joints, complement the refurbished original furniture, blending engineering precision with natural warmth and meeting the needs of multigenerational living through a layout of separate units and shared spaces connected by a central staircase.

The renovation of Borová Lada Cottage is not only a restoration of a building but also a tribute to the Czech vacation-housing culture. The roof insulation detail mimics the edge of "zmijovka," the classic cap worn by generations of Czech cottage-goers, infusing the project with profound cultural connotations. Every design choice, from material selection to space layout, reflects Studio Ply?’s respect for history, care for the environment, and understanding of human life. This cottage, which might have vanished, now stands firmly in the Bohemian Forest, carrying memories and welcoming the future, becoming a harmonious coexistence of history, nature, and modern life.
