At both Stansted and Luton, visiting friends and family wasthe dominant reason for travel,constituting48% and 47% respectively. Holiday travel wasthe next most common purpose, with 36% of passengers at Stansted and 34% at Luton flying for a vacation.By contrast, business travelcomprisedunder one-fifth at each airport,whiletrips for other reasons were negligible, at merely 2%.

The remaining two airports, however, demonstrated different patterns.At Gatwick, holiday travelaccounted for the largest proportion, at 54%. Visits to friends and familyrepresented30%,roughly twice the share ofbusiness-related travel.In comparison, holiday trips and social visitswere equally popularat Heathrow Airport,each accounting for35%. About a quarter of passengers travelled for business (26%),which was more than four times the figure forother purposes (4%).
