Most of the dates were from the 1980s, but one entry, written in neat handwriting, read:

“If someone ever finds this, tell me what your favorite line is. — T.H.”

Smiling, Claire turned to page 112 and underlined her favorite:

“Forever is composed of nows.”

Then, at the bottom of the card, she added:

“That line. It feels like spring in a sentence. — C.”

The next week, she returned to the same spot. When she opened the book again, there was a fresh reply:

“Beautiful choice. Mine’s on page 88. Shall we keep this going? — T.H.”

And so they did—an anonymous exchange of thoughts and poetry, scribbled in pencil on a single old card. They never wrote names, only initials.

Weeks passed. Their messages grew longer, more playful, more personal.

One day, T.H. wrote:

“I’m here every Friday at 5. If you’re curious enough, maybe I’ll see you.”

That Friday, Claire walked into the library with trembling hands.
At 5:01, in the Poetry section, a man stood by shelf #402. He held a copy of Emily Dickinson and a pencil in hand.

When their eyes met, neither needed to say a word.
