A photography guidebook published by a major Chinese press has drawn controversy after readers found that nearly half of its images were allegedly AI-generated and contained obvious anatomical errors.

The book, titled
Portrait Photography, priced at 30 yuan, reportedly includes images showing common AI flaws such as blurred facial features, unnatural lighting, distorted hand poses, and figures with six fingers or toes.
A review of the book found that of the 159 images used to illustrate portrait photography techniques, 75, nearly half, appeared to be AI-generated rather than real photographs.

Customer service staff at Posts & Telecom Press, the publishing house that released the guidebook, confirmed the quality issues, adding that anyone who purchased the book would be offered unconditional refunds. The publisher said the author failed to disclose the use of AI-generated images and that the problem was not identified during the editorial review process, calling it an internal oversight and apologizing for the lapse.

The case has also highlighted China's tightening oversight of AI-generated content. Rules that took effect in September 2025 require AI-generated images used for commercial purposes to be clearly labeled. However, despite being published after the rules came into force, the book carried no such disclosures, placing it in apparent violation of the requirements.

Nie Jinquan, a professor at Shandong Normal University and vice-chairman of the Shandong Photographers Association, said the use of AI-generated images undermines the core purpose of photography textbooks.
"Photography books should reflect real shooting experience," he said. "AI images mislead readers and disrespect the profession."
