前不久，啟明星學生在縱橫杯中文辯論賽滿載而歸，上周末，我們的孩子又從NHSDLC英文辯論比賽中脫穎而出！——
12月9日和10日，2023 NHSDLC（National High School Debate League of China）美式辯論聯賽北京城市賽在啟明星學校舉行，這是在中國廣受認可的英文辯論賽事。本次比賽有北京京西學校、北京市鼎石學校、北京市朝陽區世青學校、上海平和雙語學校等約30所學校的73支隊伍參加。
經過2天角逐，啟明星學生在初中組和初中新手組均取得了閃亮的成績：

啟明星學校獲得初中組冠軍。

9年級學生許書凱獲最佳辯手第一名，9年級黃吉瀚獲最佳辯手第二名；且兩人在第一天的4次小組賽全勝，以第一名的成績直接晉級第二天的8強淘汰賽。

此外，啟明星成立僅2個月的新手組也表現亮眼：
第一天小組賽，6個新手組全部晉級到淘汰賽，其中2組更以4場全勝成績成為種子隊伍。最終，啟明星新手組1組進入8強，3組進入16強，2組進入32強，4人獲得最佳辯手！

“孩子們太努力了！他們花了大量時間做辯題相關的調研，從非常多的角度思考和預備論據。另外，我們的教練也付出了大量時間和精力，他們在課內外大力支持孩子們參加的每一場線上和線下比賽！”啟明星課后課總監、學術校隊總協調人李冰說。
Jerry Tang是啟明星特聘的英文辯論隊資深教練，陪伴啟明星小將們快2年了。談到啟明星學生為什么能在比賽中擁有出色的表現，他說：“別的學校的學生更多地把辯論當作游戲，但啟明星學生會把辯題和日常的生活緊密地聯系在一起，并且能迅速掌握一些高難度的概念。我想，這是因為他們善于獨立思考，并且處于開放的學習環境中。”
啟明星學生在中英文辯論賽中都能得心應手，背后原因還包括學校的課程設置。啟明星擁有長達20年的中英雙語教學傳統，成熟的雙語教學體系保障學生能夠順暢切換兩種語言，實現兩種文化體系知識的自由遷移。而辯論賽所考察的語言表達、思辨和邏輯分析能力、資料查詢、統籌分析和研究學習能力，也滲透在啟明星的日常教學當中。
在NHSDLC本賽季的線上賽階段，啟明星學生同樣成績出色，我們羅列在此，和孩子們共同慶祝：

Not long ago, Daystar students accomplished champions in ZongHeng Cup Chinese Debate, and this past weekend, our students came out on top from the NHSDLC English Debate Tournament!
On December 9th and 10th, the Beijing City Offline Tournament of the 2023 NHSDLC (National High School Debate League of China), a widely recognized English debate tournament in China, was held at Daystar Academy. The tournament was attended by 73 teams from about 30 schools, including WAB, Keystone Academy, BWYA, and Shanghai Pinghe Bilingual School.
After 2 days of competition, Daystar students achieved stunning results in both Middle School and Middle School Novice Division:

Daystar won the Champion of Middle School Division.

Evan Hsu (G9) won the First Place as the Top Speaker and Jihan Huang (G9) won the Second Place as the Top Speaker;both of them won all the 4 preliminary rounds on the first day and automatically advanced to the quarterfinal round on the second day as top seed of the middle school division.

Daystar's 2-month-old novice team also performed well:on the first day of the group stage, all 6 novice teams advanced to the elimination round and 2 teams were seeded by winning all the 4 preliminary rounds. In the end, Daystar's Group 1 entered the Top 8, Group 3 entered the Top 16, Group 2 entered the Top 32, and 4 of the speakers won the Top Speakers!

"The students worked so hard! They spent a lot of time doing research and prepare evidences for the debate topic. Also, a lot of time and effort was put in by our coaches, who strongly supported the students inside and outside the classroom in every online and offline tournament they participated in!" said Catherine Li, Director of After School Programs at Daystar Academy and Chief Coordinator of the Academic School Teams.
Jerry Tang was specially hired by Daystar as a senior coach for the NHSDLC English debate team. He has worked with Daystar’s young debaters for almost 2 years and has personally witnessed the distinctiveness of Daystar’s students. “Students from other schools tend to view debate as a game, but our students connect it closely with their daily lives and are able to quickly and comprehensively grasp certain concepts. I think this is because they are good at independent thinking and are used to operating in an open learning environment.”
The reasons behind Daystar students' ability to excel in both English and Chinese debating competitions also include the school's curriculum.Daystar has a 20-year tradition of bilingual teaching, and the mature bilingual teaching system guarantees that students can smoothly switch between the two languages and realize the free transfer of knowledge between the two cultural systems. The language expression, critical thinking and logical analysis skills, data searching, overall analysis, and research and learning skills examined in the debate competitions are also reflected in Daystar daily teaching and learning.
