林境之華

在當代藝術的全球語境中，如何以自身文化的思想資源重建藝術語言體系，一直是藝術家需要持續面對的核心議題。常年往返中美兩國的藝術家Aurelia Lu（呂美）的本次個展《林境之華》就是針對這個議題的自我回應。展覽通過展出Aurelia Lu近年創作的“天、地、人”三大系列作品，從符號、形態與哲學等方向探討藝術在跨文化語境中的生成與更新。

“林境之華”既是展覽主題，也是藝術家創作思想的象征性表達。“林”象征著生命的生發與自然秩序；“境”指向感知與精神的場域；“之華”則是能量顯現、精神綻放的象征。基于東西方文化沖撞的呂美以此為結構隱喻，將其“天、地、人”系列作品貫通為一個由形入神、由物達道的創作語境。

Aurelia Lu的“天”系列以圓、三角、曲線等符號，通過傳統水墨同材質的滲透與綜合材料相疊合，營造出一種流動與秩序并存的空間張力。其作品的抽象不同于西方形式自律的理性，而是根植于其東方傳統“氣韻生動”的觀念，遂使其作品成為Aurelia Lu觀念與感知的共融場域。而在她的“地”系列作品中，藝術家聚焦形質與文明的積淀。金字塔、金山、竹簡等意象在她的作品中轉譯為文化記憶的象征。通過含蓄的方式將圖形意向轉化為精神能量的象征，繼而成為其文化記憶與形式語言的交匯。她的“人”系列則在“天”與“地”之間建立精神中介，通過柔化的色層與隱約的形體暗示“靈”的存在方式，用佛像殘影、符號碎片與龍鳳等意象的融入，使“人”系列作品成為她創作語義的匯聚點。

Aurelia Lu的創作整體上呈現出一種基于其常年往返中美兩地受東西方文化沖擊下的特殊背景的跨文化藝術方法——以東方哲思為根基，以西方現代主義的結構理性與材料實驗為形式，在抽象結構中追尋精神秩序的可見化，通過復合媒介的層積結構，利用圖像符號在顯與隱、物質與精神之間轉換，使觀者的凝視成為意義生成的過程。

正如梅洛-龐蒂所言：“可見之物并非對象，而是世界在我們之中的顯現。” ，Aurelia Lu的作品是這種顯現的視覺形態——在“林境”中生發，在“之華”中綻放，構成一個從物質到精神、從形式到意識的完整循環。由此成為一個關于“藝術如何生成”的思想模型，以視覺方式重述“天、地、人”三才共生的當代表達。

The Blooming Realm

In the global context of contemporary art, how to reconstruct an artistic language system using the intellectual resources of one’s own culture has always been a core issue that artists must continuously confront. The solo exhibition of “The Blooming Realm” by Artist Aurelia Lu, who frequently travels between China and the United States, serves as her personal response to this question. Three major series of works: Heaven, Earth, and Humanity, created by Aurelia Lu in recent years, represent this. The exhibition explores the formation and renewal of art in a cross-cultural context from the perspectives of symbolism, form, and philosophy.

The Blooming Realm is both the title of the exhibition and a symbolic expression of the artist’s creative philosophy. The “Realm” symbolises the growth of life, the order of nature, and the field of perception and spirit. The“Blooming” represents the manifestation of energy and the blossoming of the spirit. Together, these three elements form an internal cyclical system that moves from generation to manifestation, from form to spirit, subtly echoing the cosmology articulated in the《 I Ching》: “The great virtue of heaven and earth is giving life.” Using this structure as a metaphor, the exhibition presents Aurelia's "Heaven", "Earth", and "Humanity" series.

Aurelia’s "Heaven" series employs symbols such as circles, triangles, and curves, combining the permeating qualities of traditional ink wash with layered mixed media to create a spatial tension where fluidity and order coexist. The abstraction in her works differs from the rational self-discipline of Western forms, as it is rooted in the Eastern traditional concept of “rhythmic vitality” (qiyun shengdong). This makes her work a fusion of her conceptual thinking and sensory perception. In her Earth series, the artist focuses on the accumulation of form and civilisation. Imagery such as pyramids, golden mountains, and bamboo slips is translated into symbols of cultural memory. Through subtle means, graphic intentions are transformed into symbols of spiritual energy, becoming the intersection of her cultural memory and formal language. Her Humanity series establishes a spiritual intermediary between Heaven and Earth. Through softened colour layers and faintly suggested forms, it hints at the existence of the “soul.” By incorporating imagery such as the lingering shadows of Buddha statues, fragmented symbols, and dragons and phoenixes, the Humanity series becomes the converging point of her creative semantics.

Overall, Aurelia’s work demonstrates a cross-cultural artistic approach grounded in her unique experience of the collision between Eastern and Western cultures. Rooted in Eastern philosophical thought and shaped by the structural rationality and material experimentation of Western modernism, she seeks to make spiritual order visible within abstract structures. Through the layered accumulation of composite media and the transformation of visual symbols between the manifest and the hidden, the material and the spiritual, she turns the viewer’s gaze into a process of meaning generation.

As Maurice Merleau-Ponty remarked, “The visible is not an object, but the manifestation of the world within us.” Aurelia’s works are a visual form of this manifestation—generated within the “wooded realm” and blossoming in its “radiance,” forming a complete cycle from material to spirit, from form to consciousness. Thus, they become a conceptual model about “how art is generated,” visually rearticulating a contemporary expression of the symbiotic triad of Heaven, Earth, and Humanity.

Aurelia Lu（呂美）

旅美藝術家，現創作生活于紐約和北京。曾就讀于中央工藝美院環境藝術系，中央美院蔣采萍工筆重彩畫研究班，國際書象學社，紐約藝術學生聯盟。北美清華美院校友會副會長，海外美術家協會會員，北京工筆重彩畫會會員。呂美曾在中國，美國，歐洲各地舉辦個展群展等，參加巴黎，邁阿密和瑞士巴塞爾等地博覽會，作品被中外美術館及私人收藏。呂美的作品關注“自然”，“宇宙”，“生命”，以及在東西方文化影響下的內心沖突，身份認知和心靈對話。所以對“自然”，“心性”，“心靈”的表達是她作品所關注的方向，希望通過藝術的方式來療愈人類的情感和情緒。 呂美的創作的理念和思考主要來自于東方的哲學觀與智慧，比如“陰陽”，“虛實”，“空無”，“天圓地方” ，“大象無形”，“大道至簡”，“道”是最高的抽象，回到物體結構本身，尋找本質，回到自我，極簡，純色，神秘，光，塔，精神性，是對她作品的解讀。作品的形式包括抽象水墨，綜合材料和裝置。呂美的作品是她的心路歷程和心性流露，是她對生命，虛無及終極問題的純粹表達。

Chinese American artist, Aurelia Lu studied and graduated from The Central Academy of Art and Design, Beijing, The International ShuXiang Society, Beijing, and The Art Student League of New York. She currently lives and works between New York City and Beijing. Lu Mei's artworks have been exhibited and collected by Museums, galleries, and private collectors throughout the US, China, and Europe. Aurelia Lu’s artworks are influenced by her intensive study of both Oriental and Western culture, and her personal life experience. Her art form includes contemporary inks, mixed media, and installations. Her artworks depict traces of her heart. It’s the image of her soul and spiritual pursuit of art. According to Aurelia Lu: “Life is a Journey to return home.”
