On October 29, the United Nations in China hosted a grand event at its compound in Beijing, celebrating the 79th United Nations Day and the 45th anniversary of the UN’s presence in China.
The theme for this year’s UN Day is “Aspire, Connect, Transform, For Our Common Future.” The celebration aims to spark dialogue about the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),aligning perfectly with Daystar Academy’s educational philosophyof nurturing students to develop social innovation skills and an international perspective.
Daystar Academy was the only school present and participating at the UN event.
Students from Daystar’s Peking Opera troupe performed a renowned Peking Opera piece, “Pear Garden.”

The students’ performance received high praise from the audience; Daystar’s troupe was even invited to take a group photo with Mr. Siddharth Chatterjee, the UN Resident Coordinator in China.

The nine young performers included various roles—Qingyi (young female), Laodan (old female), and Wusheng (martial artist)—and they showcased a medley of excerpts from The Drunken Beauty, Fishing for Gold Tortoise, Mu Guiying Takes Command, Dingjun Mountain, and Taking Tiger Mountain by Strategy.
“It is essential to our Daystar community that we ensure students remain connected to rich local traditions, even more so in an international-orientated bilingual school setting. This invitation was even more meaningful because the UN Intangible Cultural Heritage Day fell shortly before the event on October 17th. Peking Opera was officially inscribed in 2010 on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Our student performance was nothing short of outstanding and received high praise from all of the assembled international dignitaries. My thanks and gratitude to our students and their teachers for the countless hours of practice and dedication they have shown. They have inspired our community in many ways and have shown so much courage at such a young age. And their performance was sensational, and I have rarely felt more proud of our students .
—Daniel Williams, Daystar Academy Executive Head of Schools

While Daystar Academy focuses on developing students’ international perspectives and English skills, we also place special emphasis on learning about traditional Chinese culture.Daystar is one of the first private and international schools in Beijing to establish a Peking Opera troupe.
To ensure quality teaching, Daystar Academy invites artists from the National Peking Opera Company to provide instructional guidance for Daystar’s Peking Opera troupe. The students who performed on the UN stage were all trained by the Daystar Peking Opera troupe.Eight of them have even been selected for the National Peking Opera Company’s children’s troupe, joining the “national team!”
